Tile Adhesive Formulation by KR CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES

Pu Flex Tile Adhesive Formulation

Description

PU Flex Tile Adhesive is a high-performance adhesive that uses polyurethane-based chemistry to provide exceptional bonding strength, flexibility, and water resistance. PU Flex is ideal for bonding tiles in areas subject to vibration, slight movement, or high-stress environments such as floors with underfloor heating, large-format tiles, outdoor spaces, and wet areas. Ingredients for PU Flex Tile Adhesive Formulation: Polyurethane Resin (PU) – 1 part The primary binder that provides flexibility, high bonding strength, and moisture resistance. It forms a durable, elastic bond that can accommodate slight movements in the substrate. Fine Silica Sand – 3 to 4 parts Acts as a filler and provides body to the adhesive. It also enhances the adhesion and improves the workability of the adhesive. Polymer Additive (SBR, Acrylic Polymers) – 0.1 part Enhances the adhesion and flexibility of the adhesive, especially on non-porous surfaces such as glass and polished ceramics. Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) – 0.05 part This cellulose derivative increases the open time of the adhesive and enhances the workability, allowing for easy application and adjustment of tiles during installation. Plasticizer – 0.05 part Plasticizers enhance the flexibility of the adhesive, improve smoothness, and ensure that it is easy to spread. Cement (Portland Cement or White Cement) – 1 part The base material that provides strength to the adhesive. It also adds durability to the bond. Marble Powder or Limestone Powder – 0.5 part Used for its smooth texture, it ensures a finer finish and helps in improving the spreadability of the adhesive. Water – As required Used to activate the adhesive and achieve the desired consistency. Water must be added gradually to avoid making the mixture too runny. Catalyst/Hardener – 0.02 parts (for faster curing) A catalyst can be used to accelerate the curing process, particularly useful in colder environments. This step is optional, depending on the curing time needed. Antifungal Additives (Optional) Can be included for applications in damp environments to prevent mold or mildew formation. Instructions for Preparation: Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a clean, dry container, combine the fine silica sand, Portland cement, and marble or limestone powder. Stir thoroughly to ensure the dry components are evenly mixed. Add the Polyurethane Resin: Slowly introduce the polyurethane resin (PU) into the dry mixture. Mix thoroughly to ensure uniform dispersion. The PU resin provides flexibility and bonding strength. Add the Polymer Additive: Add SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) or acrylic polymer to enhance adhesion, especially for challenging substrates or non-porous surfaces like ceramic and glass tiles. Incorporate Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC): Gradually mix in the HPMC to increase the open time, giving you ample time to adjust the tiles during installation. Add the Plasticizer: Mix in the plasticizer to improve the workability and smoothness of the adhesive. Add Water: Gradually add water to the mixture while stirring continuously until the desired smooth, paste-like consistency is achieved. Ensure that the mixture is thick enough to hold the tiles but not too thick to apply smoothly. Optional Catalyst: If faster curing is required, add the catalyst/hardener in small quantities. This step should be done carefully as too much can alter the properties of the adhesive. Check Consistency: The final mixture should be a thick, smooth paste that holds its form when spread with a notched trowel but is still easy to work with. Application: Use a notched trowel to apply the adhesive to the substrate. Spread evenly to ensure a consistent bond and to avoid air pockets. Press tiles firmly into place. Allow Curing: Allow the adhesive to cure undisturbed for 24–48 hours depending on environmental conditions. Full curing may take up to 7 days depending on the layer thickness and temperature. Advantages of PU Flex Tile Adhesive: Exceptional Flexibility: Ideal for bonding tiles in areas subject to movement or vibration, such as underfloor heating or areas with slight structural movement. High Bonding Strength: Ensures strong adhesion on both porous and non-porous surfaces, including large-format and heavy tiles. Water-Resistant: Suitable for high-moisture areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and swimming pools. Versatility: Can be used on a variety of surfaces, including concrete, plaster, tiles, and stone. Extended Open Time: Allows for longer working periods, making installation more convenient. Durability: Forms a long-lasting bond that resists cracking or movement over time. Resistance to Environmental Factors: Can withstand temperature fluctuations, humidity, and high-traffic conditions. Additional Notes: Coverage: The coverage will depend on the thickness of the adhesive layer and the tile size. Typically, one 20 kg bag of PU Flex Tile Adhesive will cover approximately 4-6 m² at 3mm thickness. Open Time: Open time typically ranges from 20-40 minutes, depending on ambient temperature and humidity. Working Temperature: Best applied in temperatures ranging from 5°C to 35°C. Storage: Store the PU Flex Tile Adhesive in a cool, dry place to prevent premature curing of the adhesive. This PU Flex Tile Adhesive formulation is ideal for areas that require strong bonding power, high flexibility, and durability under stress. It’s perfect for challenging substrates and high-performance applications.
